Let me set the stage: lets say that I am consulting with my dad, who would be a professional in transition (or not perhaps he just values relationship management), is savvy on the computer, and has limited time. Lets start with ACT! ACT! is a very popular Customer Relationship Management (CRM) program used by a ton of people to manage sales leads, prospects, customers, etc. It is a sales tool, for sales people. In my recent networking with career professionals, I have found ACT! to be the most-recommended relationship management tool for executives in transition (there wasnt anything else to recommend). Basically you spend $200 or $300, install it on your computer, and you are good to go! The Good Buy it once and you get it forever. Pretty private data, since this isnt going on the Internet (so to make it 99% hackproof, just never plug your computer into the Internet). You have complete control over upgrades (if theres a new feature you dont like, dont upload it!). You have complete control over backups. It should do a good job with managing relationships, setting action items, etc. That is what it was designed for. There are a lots of bells-and-whistles. The Bad You only get what you buy if they have super-cool updates, you would have to pay for those. If you use more than one computer, or every want to access your contacts and database from somewhere else (your office, the library, etc.) you cant, since your ACT! database is only on one computer. You have to install the software. No big deal for most. You have to manage the upgrades, which is usually no big deal, but what if there are bugs? You have to do the backups, which isnt hard, but its a pain, and really, who does backups on their computer (I do, I use Mozy.com)? If you dont do a backup and anything happens to your computer (it happens, right?? How many computers (or hard drives) have you had in the last 3 years?) you may just lose your entire network and related information. While its clearly a relationship manager, it was never designed to help you manage your career relationships. So a lot of the features and reports may not make sense to you, or be completely intuitive because it was designed for a sales environment, not for what your needs are. Outlook is the mail client from Microsoft, extremely popular throughout the world, mostly in business settings. Ive used it for at least 10 years, and love many aspects of it. The Good Most people use Outlook (or something like it) at work, so you are probably quite familiar with how it works. The contacts are integrated into the entire mail package, so for example, to forward a contact to someone else, you just select that contact and hit Control-F, and it opens a new message with that contact as an attachment. Great integration! Outlook has lots of add-ins that you can purchase, potentially adding lots of great features to help you organize and manage your information. Again, its on your computer, so you control the version, bug fixes, backups, etc. Integrates well with PDAs so you can take lots of the functionality on the road with you (if you have a PDA). It was designed during my job search to help manage, track and organize a job search, help job seekers manage all the contacts they make during this hot networking time, keep track of companies they might want to work at, where they send their resume, etc. Its a totally new type of software, very focused on helping YOU with all the information you gather during your career (whether you are in a job search or not). The Good As a web-based relationship management tool, any and all updates are immediately available to all users, and you dont even see the upgrade happen. We usually do updates at night (we did a new one last night, details are coming later), and focus on (a) customer requests, (b) anything we can do to make the system more intuitive or polished, (c) things that are recommended by career and networking experts. We also do backups for you. We have nightly and weekly backups ready to restore the program and data again, no cost to you, and you dont even have to worry about it. You can access it from any online computer (your house, your office, the library, your mother-in-laws, an iPhone, etc.). Its specifically designed for you to manage career information. Based on the CRM concept, weve taken gobs of career expert advice and developed a place for you to manage your own stuff. Even though its mostly designed for personal career relationship management, we have people who use it as their small business CRM, or their consultant/freelancer CRM, or non-career relationship management (just to get birthday reminders e-mailed to them). In addition, its a great tool for someone how manages other people, perhaps volunteer groups, to keep track of things that are going on with individuals. Were not trying to be all things to all people but some people are more creative than we are. Its either free or inexpensive. You can have a lifetime free membership and upgrade for $9.95 a month just when you need extra bells-and-whistles. I have users that bounce between free and premium regularly. If you ever go from premium to free, we do not, we will not, hold your data hostage! Even the free version is extremely functional. Were current and relevant. I went to three conferences this year with career professionals and network regularly with experts in the career space. I am always listening for new ideas that I can incorporate for you. This blog is a place to share career ideas with you you wont get that kind of career focus/emphasis from CRM companies. The Bad One of the most frequently asked questions Im asked is, how long will this be around. The answer simply is, for a long time. Im not in a job search anymore, and we have funding and cash flow, and have some exciting deals weve been working on. Even if something bad were to happen, and I had to get a job and cut off the financing to the development team, the cost to keep the site up and function is extremely low, so its not going to go away. Another concern people have is their datas security. I think its bad practice to publicly outline what your IT security measures are, as it gives the bad guys places to look for holes, but let me say that we are doing everything we know to do to protect your data, even going beyond the industry standards for security. We have tried to balance usability with functionality, and its a hard balance. There are a number of people who hit the ground running, but others say I have no idea what to do now! We have some new designs coming to help with that, and I do free user webinars regularly to answer your questions and help you learn how to use the system. We have the ability to import and export data, but we dont have sleek cool integration with Outlook, PDAs, etc. YET. Thats on the list of stuff to do. My conclusion for my dad. Im totally biased, but Id suggest that my dad use JibberJobber for career relationship management (after all, hes an investor in the company ;)). And Outlook for e-mail. And other tools, too. 7 Common Self-Doubts That Kill Your Motivation  (and How To Fix Them) Motivation fuels us to achieve incredible things and set higher goals for ourselves. This process, while beneficial, naturally creates a sense of doubt within ourselves; however, by harnessing tools such as attention and confidence you can quickly resume handling the task at hand without the cloud of doubt. The Basics of Motivation   The doubts surrounding motivation which invariably result from the lack of understanding of how it functions and how it may be leveraged. From our more primal ancestors, motivation tied to both the elimination of threats and gathering of food. While we no longer see this direct correlation between our secure and notably evolved societies, motivation serves as the reason behind why people do things. Should I do a PhD Have you ever wanted to answer the emergency call for a doctor on a plane? “I can’t resuscitate him captain, but I can increase his understanding of the application of nanotechnology to enhance hydraulic fracturing in unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs.” Aside from the allure of adding ‘Dr’ to your name, what impact could a PhD have on your career? What should you be aware of when considering an application for a PhD?  A voyage of discovery Status, financial reward, career progression, personal ambition… there may be any number of reasons that inspire PhD students to undertake research. But for many the fundamental motivation is the opportunity to explore their intellectual curiosity and enhance knowledge and understanding in their chosen field. University of Warwick academic Neil Wilson makes it sound very exciting: “The best aspect, purely selfishly, was the satisfaction of thinking a thought that no-one had ever thought before and succeeding in an experiment that no-one had succeeded in before. Doing something genuinely new.” Financial reward Financial return is unlikely to be the predominant factor for many students considering a PhD but it is interesting to consider the impact doctoral research could have on career earnings. Bernard Casey (1) calculated that a PhD graduate will typically earn 26% more in his/her career than someone who never went to university. This  looks to be a substantial return on the significant commitment undertaken during a research degree, until it is compared to the 23% premium a Masters graduate also enjoys over someone without a degree! Unless your PhD offers something an employer specifically requires (an expertise in quantitative analysis for example) you may not enjoy a significantly higher salary than other graduate level recruits. There is some anecdotal evidence however, to suggest that PhD graduates beginning their career at graduate entry level, progress through a scheme more quickly than graduates (and therefore enjoy higher salaries at an earlier point in their career). What are the employment prospects for an academic career? Higher education is an extremely competitive sector. The reality is that your career could begin with an hourly paid, temporary contract. The Guardian newspaper has calculated that one third of academics fall into this category and a survey by the Economist found that for every 100 PhD graduates every year, there were approximately only 20 jobs in academia. Although success in academia may depend to an extent on your ability to generate research funding and your publication record, it will also draw on your personal attributes of resilience, determination and perseverance. Will non-academic employers value my PhD? There will be a variety of opportunities available for those doctoral researchers who decide not to pursue an academic career on completion of their research. Recruiters will value the skills and knowledge developed on a PhD if the applicant presents them in a way that demonstrates their transferability and relevance. A researcher’s unique selling points could include for example, analytical, project management and collaborative skills all developed to a very high level â€" skills rated  by employers. The PhD graduate perspective… two Physicists, Dr Neil Wilson Dr Jop Vlaskamp share their experience What were the best aspects of post graduate research? “My PhD gave me freedom to find out more about my chosen research area, nanotechnology and through the research I undertook I felt that I made a real contribution to the field. It was of course an intellectual challenge, and I also enjoyed the practical aspects. I enjoyed discussing research and learning from my supervisors and colleagues.“  â€œThe freedom to focus for a longer period on a very interesting project and the ability to work with a number of extremely talented people.”  And the worst…  â€œâ€¦character building in the long run: I learned that you can work really hard for several months on an idea and it can come to nothing so you have to start again, that you can produce a paper that you are really proud of but a referee can condemn it with a sentence, that equipment often breaks and experimental research is sometimes irreproducible. Dealing with failure and rejection can be hard when you invest so much of yourself in a project, but you learn from these experiences and it makes the successful experiment and the accepted paper all the sweeter.” “project took longer than the funding lasted, requiring the investment of some extra money to complete.” What Impact has the PhD made on your career? “At the start of my PhD I was by no means committed to a career in research, but I knew that I was interested in Physics and nanotechnology and wanted to explore it a little further before signing up to a lucrative career in finance like my friends from university. The biggest impact my PhD made was that it developed my passion for research that gave me the drive to succeed in an academic environment. It taught me the lesson as well that the road to an academic career is hard, requiring hard work and commitment, but the intellectual rewards are worth it for me. That has helped me also to keep perspective during my subsequent career I know why I am doing my job, because I am passionately interested in it.” “My PhD has opened doors to some very interesting jobs and in this respect has made a strong positive difference, but it has delayed settling into a stable career by many years. This is especially true since I spent a few years on the academic track before moving to industry.” The decision to take a PhD… According to research undertaken by Vitae (2) fewer than one third of PhD students have a career plan, even in the latter stages of their research. This does not call into question the validity of the decision to take a PhD but rather   emphasises that it is a choice that ideally should be approached with the same degree of reflection, realism and research as any other career decision. One of the first signs its time to look for a new job is you absolutely dread getting out of bed in the morning. You dread getting out of bed in the morning. Do you repeatedly hit the snooze button? Do you have an overwhelming desire to remain buried under the covers, far from demands, deadlines and clamoring coworkers? One of the biggest red flags of job dissatisfaction is an unwillingness to face the day not just some mornings, but every morning. Whats your body trying to tell you? But what if youre just not a morning person? Or you just dont feel like going to work, regardless of what kind of job it is? If youve been reading my blog a while youll know I love my job. But Ill be honest, there still are days that I dont want to get out of bed either. I just feel lazy or Im not looking forward to a particular task I have to tackle. So how do you know when its bad enough to change jobs? Its bad enough when its a constant nagging feeling. When you dont want to get out of bed every day of the week, not just some mornings. And its not just about a specific thing you have to do that day, its a general feeling of dread about your work period the whole thing. Know that, even when you have that ideal job, there are going to be days that you too arent necessarily looking forward to. Its part of life. Even in a career thats a perfect fit, there are going to be tasks you have to handle that you dont like. Thats natural.
